Unlike termites, carpenter ants don’t actually eat the wood. They only carve out nests for the colony and forage for food close by. They burrow deep into the wood, excavating it and leaving the debris outside of any one of the pinhole exits that are made. Carpenter ant workers usually only travel up to about 300 feet from a carpenter ants’ nest which is why finding a home with a steady supply of food is so great for their survival. These pests can find the smallest entry points in foundation and wall cracks to gain access to your home. Once they find their way in, they will infest your family’s home before creating multiple satellite colonies and causing significant structural damage. Satellite colonies make it even more difficult to fully exterminate carpenter ants because if you take down the parent colony, the satellite still exists.

Each carpenter ant colony has its own social structure with each ant playing a specific role. These castes are generally broken down into workers, reproductives, and the queen. Workers are generally the ant class that you will find foraging for food inside your home and these annoying pests will leave chemical pheromone trails that other carpenter ants from their colony can follow once a food source is found.
