Since termites can digest cellulose, they will consume other materials like the paper siding found on drywall, paper, and cardboard boxes. Carpenter ants will leave those items alone since they are not consuming the materials for nutrition. For example, a carpenter ant parent colony can start outside of a home in a tree or fence while satellite colonies are established inside a home. Effective treatment requires that the parent colony be discovered and treated for all of the interior colonies to collapse. Treating the parent colony and terminating the carpenter ant queen is the only way to effectively get rid of the entire carpenter ant colony.
