Japanese beetles are about ½ inch long and are easily identified with a metallic green head and golden wings with tufts of white hair underneath. Japanese beetles are an invasive species that are not found naturally in the United States. They were discovered on the east coast of the United States around 1920 and they have been moving west since. They are now common all over the US which has become an issue due to the damage they cause. Japanese beetles release pheromones to attract others which causes adults Japanese beetles to group up in large numbers. This can cause devastation to just about any household plant or crop surrounding your home. What makes these bugs even more problematic is that they will fly from plant to plant once all a plants’ leaves have been decimated. 

In addition to that, Japanese beetles lay eggs in soil which develop into white grubs that feed on the root systems of most grasses. This can cause parts of your lawn to die without explanation. If your lawn pulls up like a carpet and all the roots are severed, there is a strong possibility that you have a white grub problem that needs to be addressed before they mature into Japanese beetles. Signs of Japanese beetle activity generally start in late May through early July which is when treatment should start. Check for signs of active beetles on warm days in areas that are in direct sunlight. Any signs of damaged or skeletonized leaves indicates that the Japanese beetle populations are starting to get out of control. They can become difficult to manage once their populations explode but it is important to maintain treatment methods until their numbers start to decrease when temperatures drop.

Attacking the larval stage is most effective when done in late summer to early fall when grubs are strong enough to feed on grass roots. 

Removal by Hand – Physically removing Japanese beetles and knocking them into a bucket of soapy water is an effective method of beetle control. Ensuring that they are dropped into soapy water will make sure the beetles drown which will help mitigate the possibility of another infestation.
