Tick Information

EcoGuard Pest Management is a leader in tick control methodology & service.

Ticks are a parasitic pest that can cause you and your pets serious health problems. They are vectors for over 15 serious diseases like lyme disease which can cause chronic problems if left undiagnosed and untreated. These small dark bugs are found in shaded areas of organic refuse and vegetation and will often latch onto your pet’s fur or maybe even onto your clothing or skin. They will also hitch a ride when you’re out on a stroll, at a dog park, or out on a hiking trail. If bitten, they pose another problem. They are difficult to remove because the heads will latch on and separate which could potentially lead to infection if not removed properly.

They generally do not make their way indoors on their own which makes the interior of a household less of a concern unless ticks are found alone. Isolated ticks can come from your pets, but they can also hitch rides on other household rodents. Some ticks will lay eggs in the fur of its host, but isolated ticks found in a home could mean that they have detached after a blood meal to lay eggs. Ticks will lay thousands of eggs at a time, but instances of household infestations are rare if proper steps are taken. That said, if ticks are found inside, a thorough inspection by a trained tick control specialist to check for instances of ticks in earlier stages of its life cycle is recommended.

Ticks pose a major threat, but tick prevention strategies are easy to implement to minimize the potential of these unwanted pests.

6 Ways To Prevent Ticks In The Yard

  1. Remove overgrown grass – Ticks love to use long grass as a ladder to reach up and latch onto a host. Keeping grass cut short will reduce tick contact and keep the grass exposed to sunlight
  2. Remove vegetation and debris – Tick are also found in vegetation, fallen leaves, and debris. Clearing any areas that have debris build up and overgrowth will remove harborage areas for ticks to thrive.
  3. Cut back branches – Cutting back low hanging branches that spill over onto pathways will remove pathways for ticks to latch onto a host. Cutting back higher branches will allow sunlight in which reduces optimal moisture levels for ticks to thrive.
  4. Adjust clothing – Simple act like tucking socks into pants and wearing long sleeves will reduce bare skin for ticks to attach to. Wearing light colors makes ticks stand out so you can remove them before they bite.
  5. Use pesticides – Utilizing sprays like DEET are effective as a tick deterrent. Using chemical pesticides to treat the exterior of your home are effective for tick extermination.
  6. Pet inspections – Regular pet inspections are recommended to prevent ticks from catching a ride. Any ticks that are found should be carefully removed and exterminated.
