Rat Information

EcoGuard Pest Management is a leader in rat control methodology & service.

While there are several species of rats that can cause problems, the most common 2 varieties found in American homes and business are either Norway Rats or Roof Rats. Norway rats are also known as sewer rats and are the larger of the 2. Norway Rats are generally brown with a grey underbelly and can grow to be over 12 inches from their nose to the tip of their tail. Roof Rats tend to be black rats and are generally smaller than their Norway counterparts but with much longer tails. Both species have great senses of smell to help them find sources of food and are extremely aware of their environments. They have been shown to recognize problematic areas which result in them avoiding baits and traps if they are lucky enough to survive an encounter with either.

Norway rats are nocturnal and generally start their days at dusk. They are excellent swimmers and tend to nest in underground burrows or areas that are protected from predators where they breed, raise their young, and store food. This is why they are often found in the sewer system which is how they earned their nickname. Black rats are great climbers and tend to build nests in areas that are high above ground. Their longer tails improve their ability to climb and these rodents will often nest in the attics, walls, or storage areas of homes or businesses.

Both species of rats, cause significant issues from property destruction to the spread of disease via exposure to feces, urine, and bacterial contamination. In addition, rats will start reproducing at 3 months and can produce up to 5 litters with 5-8 young every year. They will create colonies that will expand until all available resources have been consumed. This is why early detection is important and if you notice any signs of rats you should call EcoGuard immediately to have a licensed technician come give a thorough inspection of your home or business.

Rat FAQs

  • How does pest control get rid of rats?

EcoGuard utilizes a integrated pest management strategy that includes the usage of rat traps and bait traps to address a rat problem. Different rat traps are available for DIY methods, however it takes some training and experience to maximize the efficiency of these traps by placing them in areas that are well traveled. Without that experience it can take several weeks before the traps kill any rats.

  • Is there any pest control for rats?

Only a professional pest control service team can help you get rid of rats and mice effectively. EcoGuard has a proven track record of being effective at reducing and preventing rat populations and our guarantee provides our customers with the peace of mind that they would expect from the best pest control services available.

  • How much does it cost to hire a rat exterminator?

Generally, rat pest control services will average from $300 to $700 depending on the service and area of treatment. That said, EcoGuard Pest Management prices competitively for all services and if you have signs of rats, call now to get an inspection and estimate.

  • How long does it take an exterminator to get rid of rats?

While it can be hard to pinpoint how long it will take to eliminate a full rodent infestation, times can vary depending on how many rats are prompting an issue. Small infestations can be resolved quickly if there are only a few rats to eliminate and could be over with in one evening if the rats are caught quickly. If the infestation requires multiple trappings then it can take much longer.
