Identifying Ants

There are over 700 different species of ants that are found in the United States. These small insects are typically brown or black and have 6 legs. The legs are connected to their thorax which is the middle segment of their body that connects their head and abdomen. While most ant species share the same general characteristics, there are some small differences that require some nuance in a targeted pest control strategy. Ant Behavior

Ants are social insects that live in colonies and reproduce at alarming rates that can reach numbers in the hundreds of thousands. Ants will originate outside of a home and then travel inside in search of food for the colony. If that wasn’t bad enough, ants will sometimes create satellite colonies inside of a home which can cause damages if unnoticed for some time. This presents another problem because even if the internal satellite colony is eliminated, its only a matter of time before it is reestablished by the external colony. 

Ant Colony Hierarchy

In addition, each ant colony has their own social structure with each ant playing a specific role. These castes are generally broken down into workers, reproductives, and the ant queen. Workers are generally the ant class that you will find foraging for food inside your home and these annoying pests will leave chemical pheromone trails that other ants from their colony can follow once a food source is found. This is why you will often see lines of ants following the same trail when they become noticeable inside your home or business.

Reproductives, or swarmers, are the winged ants that are less invasive but will often leave in search of new locations to start another colony. While this ant class is less likely to be found in or around your home, if you notice swarmers outside there is a good chance that they are trying to establish a colony close by. This is usually the first indicator that ants may be trying to infiltrate your property. Preventing Ants

Ants are typically attracted to the resources they need to sustain their colony and their ant queen. By eliminating sources of food and water as well as access points, ant can be deterred from entering your home. Ant exclusion requires that small gaps that ants use to access your home are sealed. This can be done by using caulk to seal cracks and crevices.
