Mice excrement tend to be concentrated in specific locations along their path of travel. These will generally be in areas that are not exposed but will build up quickly as one mice can produce up to 40 droppings in one evening. These generally look like a large dark brown grain of rice.

There is a distinct smell that accompanies mice that is difficult to remove. Mice cannot control their bladder, and are often excreting urine and feces each step they take. Once mice have been in your attic, the smell they leave behind attracts other mice in the future if not removed. Mice tend to use walls as a guide to get from one area to another. These established paths generally become marked with grease and dirt from their bodies. In addition to darkened paths, there are often footprints that are easily identified if a chalk like powder is used to see if the path is an active mouse path.

Mice will move through a home or business’s internal cavities at night so scratching from in the walls is a common indicator that mice have taken residence. Mice will even chew through different building materials in attempts to create paths to their next food source so sometimes the noises that are heard are mice destroying the internal structures within walls. 

Mice will shred soft materials and use the material to create a nest. Often times when a nest is found, it is generally in an area that remains undisturbed and lined with shredded cardboard, cloth, and insulation. For roof mice, the attic space provides a perfect habitat for mice proliferation while giving them access to wall space that will lead then to other areas of a home or business with food.

Sewer mice are adept at digging and will create burrows at ground level so they can nest somewhere protected from predators and disturbances. They will store food and nesting materials in these burrows so any signs of holes that exists right next to a foundation can be indicative of a mice burrow.
