Experienced Black Widow Exterminators

Black widows are probably the most recognizable spider with its iconic red hourglass on its large, shiny black abdomen. Females are venomous and have the potential to cause serious damage to people and animals if bitten by a black widow. Black widow spider bites are painful and deliver an injection of neurotoxins, but they are rarely lethal. Symptoms include increased blood pressure, sweating, fever, and nausea and anti-venom treatments from a medical professional is generally recommended. The other scary thing about black widows is the rate at which their populations can grow. One female can produce up to nine egg sacs a year with up to 400 eggs per sac. At EcoGuard Pest Management we are experienced and knowledgeable in all forms of black widow treatment methods from local treatment to web clearing. EcoGuard utilizes integrated pest management (IPM) and has over 40 years of combined experience providing black widow control services. Which is why our goal is to ensure that black widows do not get a chance to reproduce and cause an infestation.

Black Widow Information

EcoGuard Pest Management is a leader in black widow control methodology & service.

Black widows are found all over the United States and are carnivores that feed on other insects. They have earned the name because of a myth that they cannibalize their mates after breeding. However, studies have shown that this is specific to a species found primarily in the southern hemisphere. That said, females are clearly the dominant sex with much larger bodies and more potent venom. They weave strong silk webs which is remarkably more durable than your average spider silk. Widows construct irregular webbing that does not share the same structure of most spider webs. The silk is used to construct the black widow’s home, trap insects, and construct egg sacs. While not aggressive, females are territorial and will protect their nest when eggs are present. Males black widow spiders are much smaller and do not share the same look as they are much lighter in color.

For the most part, black widows are nocturnal and hide in areas that are sheltered from disturbance. Given that, it is common to find black widows in exterior harborage areas like piles of firewood, in storage areas, etc. Sometimes black widows will also make their way inside a home via small openings if they are in search of food, water, mates, or shelter. The presence of black widows in a home generally indicates that there are enough food sources to stay which could indicate a bigger pest problem. Once a black widow has taken residence, they will usually spin a web close to where they are most comfortable. This means that the webs will be in dark corners in garages, crawl spaces, and basements where they can trap prey, can have easy access to sources of moisture, and remain undisturbed.

Inspection

A licensed black widow extermination technician will search a property for webs and other areas that black widows might use as harborage points. The inspection will also result in a discussion on preventative measures that can be implemented to prevent black widows in the future.

Chemical Pesticide Application

Our licensed technicians will lay down an exterior perimeter pesticide application as a barrier to prevent black widows from entering a home. Not only will this prevent black widows, but it will also prevent other bugs they prey on from entering as well, which should reduce the available resources black widows need to survive. In addition to the exterior application, the interior will also be sprayed in areas that are potential harborage sites or entry points to ensure that the poisons are left to infect any new black widows that might take residence.

Web Removal

Once an area has been treated any remaining webs can be removed. These are often in tough to reach areas inside and outside of your home so having a professional come clean areas that might get overlooked will ensure that all webbing is found and eliminated.
